Just like Gardner, Timothy O’Sullivan photographed the Civil War. Around fifty of his photgraphs were actually published in one of Gardner’s books. Additionally, O’Sullivan was hired by the United States Government to photograph the West in order to attract settlers. This was a radical form of photography, because it focused on capturing nature as unsettled wilderness, instead of something that had been fitted to fit human’s needs.
