Henry Fox Talbot

After Daguerre exhibited his Daguerrotypes in 1839, Henry Fox Talbot went to the Royal Insititution and showed his 5 year old pictures. While Daguerre refused to reveal the process by which he took his photographs, Talbot communicated freely. In 1841 obtained a much criticized patent on his particular photography process (called the calotype process). Professional photographers had to pay up to 300 pounds yearly which was a fortune at the time. However Talbot had spent thousands of pounds on the development of this process, so many can relate to why he charged so much for licenses.
