Felix Nadar was born in France and originally made his living as a caricaturist. He was among the first people to travel by air balloon, and consequentially was a pioneer in the art of aerial photography. He also was a pioneer in experimenting with artificial light in photography. Using this light, he photographed the catacombs below Paris.
