Nicephore Niece is credited with capturing the first known photograph. Originally called a heliograph, Niece captured his images by brushing a plate of pewter with bitumen dissolved in lavender oil. He began experimenting as early as 1793, and a letter to his sister in 1816 suggests that may have discovered a way to fix images to paper, but was unable to keep them from deteriorating in light. The earliest preserved photograph found was from 1825 and it depicts a landscape with a few buildings.
